Kentish Town Removals Health and Safety Policy

Kentish Town Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all areas of our work, including domestic and commercial moves, packing, loading, unloading, transport and short-term storage.

Health and safety is an integral part of how we plan and deliver our services. We aim to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health through effective risk management, training, supervision and continuous improvement of our working practices.

Policy Aims and Objectives

The primary aim of this policy is to ensure that all operations carried out by Kentish Town Removals are conducted as safely as reasonably practicable. To achieve this, we will identify hazards, assess and control risks, provide clear instructions and information, and maintain safe systems of work for all removal and handling tasks.

Our key objectives are to reduce the likelihood of injury or ill health, promote safe driving and vehicle operations, protect property and the environment, and comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and industry guidance relevant to the removals sector.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Kentish Town Removals has overall responsibility for implementing and maintaining this Health and Safety Policy. Management will provide the resources, time and support necessary to ensure that safety arrangements are properly developed, communicated and enforced across all teams.

Management duties include setting clear safety standards, arranging suitable training and instruction, ensuring equipment and vehicles are maintained in a safe condition, reviewing risk assessments on a regular basis and investigating accidents or near misses so that appropriate corrective action can be taken.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees, including drivers, porters, packers, supervisors and office staff, share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every member of staff must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.

Employees are required to follow company procedures, use equipment and vehicles correctly, report hazards or defects without delay, wear any personal protective equipment provided, and co-operate fully with training and instructions relating to safe working practices.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before undertaking removal work at any property or premises, Kentish Town Removals will identify and assess the key risks, including access issues, manual handling demands, vehicle movements, working at height when using ramps or steps, and the handling of fragile or bulky items.

Based on these assessments we will implement safe systems of work. These may include pre-planned loading sequences, the use of appropriate lifting equipment, designated traffic routes, securing methods within vehicles, and agreed communication procedures between team members while carrying out moves in homes, offices or other locations.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core element of removal operations, and poor technique can lead to serious injuries. Kentish Town Removals will provide task-specific manual handling training, emphasising correct lifting and carrying techniques, team lifts for heavy items and the importance of avoiding unnecessary strain.

Where reasonably practicable, we will make use of handling aids such as trolleys, dollies, lifting straps and ramps to reduce physical effort and the risk of musculoskeletal injury. All equipment will be inspected regularly, maintained properly and taken out of service if found to be defective or unsafe.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are essential to the delivery of removal services and must be operated safely at all times. We will ensure that vehicles are regularly serviced, inspected and kept in a roadworthy condition, including brakes, tyres, lights, securing points and loading areas.

Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow company driving procedures and comply with road traffic regulations. Loads must be evenly distributed, properly restrained and checked before departure. Additional care will be taken when operating in residential streets, busy local roads and tight access areas to minimise risk to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Working on Customer Premises

When working in customers homes or commercial premises, our staff will act with consideration for the safety of occupants, neighbours and visitors. We will aim to keep access routes clear, manage trip hazards such as packing materials, and use safe methods when moving large items up or down stairs, through narrow corridors and around parked vehicles.

Where necessary, protective coverings may be used to reduce slip risks and protect floors. Customers will be advised to keep children and pets away from work areas during loading and unloading, and to avoid walkways being used for carrying heavy or bulky items.

Training, Information and Supervision

Kentish Town Removals will provide staff with suitable and relevant health and safety training appropriate to their role. This may include induction training, manual handling and lifting techniques, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, working in confined spaces and awareness of common hazards encountered during moves in homes and workplaces.

Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that work is carried out in accordance with training and company procedures, that new or less experienced workers are appropriately supported, and that any unsafe behaviour is corrected promptly. Safety information will be communicated clearly and updated when procedures or legal requirements change.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible so that they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve our safety measures. This includes injuries, damage to property and road traffic incidents involving company vehicles.

Staff will be briefed on emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, serious injury, spillage of hazardous materials or a road collision. Suitable first aid arrangements will be made for employees working at customer locations, and emergency services will be contacted immediately where necessary.

Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work

Kentish Town Removals recognises that the health and wellbeing of our staff is essential to safe operations. We will encourage employees to report any medical conditions or concerns that could affect their fitness for manual work or driving duties, and we will make reasonable adjustments where appropriate.

The use of alcohol or drugs that impair performance is strictly prohibited during working hours or while on call for driving or removals work. Employees must arrive for duty fit to work, appropriately rested and ready to undertake the physical and mental demands of their role safely.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or industry standards. Lessons learned from incidents, near misses and staff feedback will be used to improve our procedures and training.

Kentish Town Removals is committed to continually raising health and safety standards in all aspects of our removal and relocation services, ensuring that staff, customers and the wider community are protected as far as reasonably practicable.
